ARG Analytical Guard Columns in HPLC, 4.6#
A guard column is installed between the injector and the analytical column in a high-performance liquid chromatograph, passing through the mobile phase and the sample solution. It can pre-trap substances that can be firmly adsorbed by the analytical HPLC column and cannot be washed by the mobile phase, protecting and extending the life of the analytical HPLC column.
A 1 cm (i.e., 10 mm) long guard column will provide adequate protection for most liquid chromatographic analytical work. However, if the sample is dirty, or if it is found that the 1 cm guard column needs to be replaced frequently, then a 2 cm or 3 cm guard column should be used. The longer the guard column, the more chromatographic packing it naturally contains, and the better its protection performance. Of course, as the length of the guard column increases, the sample retention time increases accordingly. Generally speaking, the inner diameter of the guard column is the same or equivalent to the inner diameter of the analytical liquid chromatographic column.
Guard Column Cartridge Systems for HPLC accept cartridges of 4.6,3.0 or 10mm inner diameters – in either 4,10mm or 12mm lengths. Guard Cartridges are available with a comprehensive selection including all stationary phase chemistries offered by UHPLCS, ensuring compatibility between the guard column and the analytical column. Assembly is tool-free, simplifying cartridge replacement.
